Old Shawnee Mission, Fairway, Kansas.
The organizational meeting of the Shawnee Chapter, NSDAR, was held 1 December 1949. Those signing the Report of Organization of Chapter were Grace Banta Dodt, Geraldine Webb Wiand, Elizabeth Lowe Whiteford, Lela Whiteford, Ethel Crume, Eva Nicolay, Marie Newman, Hazel Crane Amos, Mayme Farmer, Irene Slagle Grayson, Ruth Elliott Hassig, Mary Hanchett Hughes, Mildred Gilmore Kent, Rosamond Knight Ward Krall, Gertrude Elliott McBean, Mary Parker, Betha Watson Sanders, Ivy Ward Stoker, Octavia Hinde Voegtli, and Helen Van Fossen Wilson. Betha Watson Sanders was Regent and Mildred Gilmore Kent was Vice Regent. Other women assisting in organizing the chapter were Mayme Cox, Phyllis Eckelman, Louise Grayson Hill,  Dorothy Wilson Lopp, Edith Regier, and Maude Ellen Neale Rodman.

The first regular meeting was held at the home of Ruth Elliott Hassig on 25 January 1950. A report was given by Mary Parker on the naturalization work being done in Kansas City and it was resolved to present a rose to each candidate at the naturalization ceremony.
In 1967, the chapter’s name was changed to Shawnee Mission Chapter, NSDAR, to reflect that members come from all areas of the Shawnee Mission postal area.

Today’s members will always be grateful to the organizing members for the wonderful beginning that was given to the chapter and the example set by the earliest members in their devotion to NSDAR and KSDAR projects. The chapter continues to strive to meet the goals of the Society.
